Oct. 10, 1923 – June 2, 2019
The world became a brighter place on Oct. 10, 1923, when Ruth Schafer was born in Molalla, Oregon to Sophie and Arthur Marine. Ruth passed away on Sunday, June 2, 2019 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
She known as “the little girl with the big smile”. Ruth grew up in a tumultuous time to become an independent young woman who handled life’s challenges with courage and grace. Graduating from high school at 16 years of age, she worked various jobs until WWII began, and she was hired by Fred Meyer to be the head buyer for the men’s department. She held this job for more than ten years. In 1943, she met and married Franc Schafer. They moved to Lincoln City in 1951 to open the Ocean Motors Ford agency, and to raise their three daughters. Ruth and Franc were highly involved in the community and with Lincoln county schools. Both were named Man & Woman of the Year for their service. Following Franc’s death in 1987, Ruth sold Ocean Motors, and joined Derr Bookkeeping as an accountant. While working with the Derrs, she also studied for her IRS tax preparer license. She opened Schafer Tax Service in her home and would serve the community with these skills until she was 78 years old. She was blessed with a second love in her life when she and Robert McKevitt solved a “laundry problem” and went on to share their amazing love for 29 years.
She is survived by her companion, Robert McKevitt, daughters, Patti Habetler and Trudi Bunker, 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her youngest daughter, Lori Mundahl.
A Celebration of Life open house will be held for Ruth Schafer at the home of Bob McKevitt on Sat. July 13, 2019 from 1- 3 pm. His address is: 2160 NE Lake Drive in Lincoln City.
